Comcast Enhances Internet Essentials Program For Low-Income Twin Cities Families By Doubling Speeds, Offering Wi-Fi

Back-to-School Celebration at Minnesota Children’s Museum Thursday, Sept. 3; free backpacks given away to students

ST. PAUL, MN (September 3, 2015) — Comcast recently announced a number of important enhancements to its Internet Essentials broadband adoption program for low-income families, including doubling the speed of the service and providing customers an in-home Wi-Fi router, both at no additional cost. Internet Essentials is available across Comcast’s entire Twin Cities / Western Wisconsin service area.

Internet Essentials logoNow entering its fifth year, Internet Essentials is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive high-speed Internet adoption program, connecting more than 2 million low-income Americans in over 500,000 homes. Internet Essentials features include:

  • Low-cost high-speed Internet service, just $9.95 / month for qualifying households
  • Free in-home Wi-Fi router, for use by the entire family
  • Option to purchase an Internet-ready computer at a significant discount
  • Multiple options for free digital literacy training, online and in-person.

Comcast has also streamlined its auto-enrollment process to help families more easily access Internet Essentials, and expanded the number of schools and families served by the program. If a child attends a school where more than 50-percent of attending students are eligible for the National Free and Reduced School Lunch Program, all student families in that school are now automatically eligible for Internet Essentials. In the Twin Cities area, nearly 250 schools automatically qualify for Internet Essentials, more than double the number of qualifying schools in September 2014.

“The Digital Divide isn’t confined to certain neighborhoods or geographic areas,” said Comcast Regional Vice President Jeff Freyer. “From day one, our goal has been to make Internet Essentials available wherever families need support, and to keep enhancing and expanding the program to serve the most families possible across our entire service area.” Freyer added, “We’re proud to have served nearly 50,000 Twin Cities residents since the program began, and we look forward to expanding that number as we move into the future.”

To help raise awareness of Internet Essentials, Comcast Twin Cities will partner with Minnesota Children’s Museum to host a special Internet Essentials back-to-school event:

WHEN: Thursday, September 3, 5 – 8 pm
WHERE: Minnesota Children’s Museum, 10 7th Street West, St. Paul
COST: FREE and open to the public

“High speed Internet has become a necessity for students and parents of all socio-economic backgrounds,” said Laura Nichols-Endres, Vice President of Development for the Minnesota Children’s Museum. “We’re proud to partner with Comcast to help spread the word about Internet Essentials and the positive impact it has on families in our community. We’re excited to help lead the charge to break down adoption barriers and bridge the digital divide.”

Minnesota Commissioner of Education Brenda Cassellius pointed to the importance of Internet access in raising student performance. “We’ve seen firsthand the kind of positive impact Internet access has on student performance across the state, and Internet Essentials is a key component in making certain all students have the opportunity for success, both in and out of the classroom.”

Other Twin Cities Internet Essentials community partners include Hmong American Partnership, Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation, Neighborhood House, and many others.

Since the program’s inception, Comcast has made 25 key enhancements to Internet Essentials, and this is the third time in four years Comcast has increased speeds for customers. The current speed is doubled to up to 10 Mbps downstream, which is enough to power multiple devices simultaneously. In addition, by offering Wi-Fi routers, customers will be able to connect any Internet-enabled device, including tablets and smartphones, which could help save money on monthly wireless bills.

For existing Internet Essentials customers, it’s easy to receive the new, faster Internet speeds. Customers can ‘power-cycle’ their cable modem with the reset button on the device, or by unplugging the modem power cord from the electrical outlet, waiting a few seconds and then plugging it back into the outlet. Customers can also reset their modem remotely by using the Xfinity My Account app, available for both Apple and Android devices.

Customers who would like a Wi-Fi router should call the dedicated Internet Essentials call center at 1-855-846-8376 (in Spanish: 1-855-765-6995) and either request to have one shipped to them for free, or schedule a professional installation, also for no additional cost. New customers will have the option to receive a Wi-Fi router at the time of sign up.

Since 2011, Comcast has invested more than $240 million in cash and in-kind support to fund digital literacy initiatives, reaching nearly 3.2 million people through our national and local non-profit partners. Internet Essentials is available in nearly 48,000 schools across the nation, encompassing more than 5,000 school districts. More information is available at www.internetessentials.com.

Comcast Increases Internet Speeds For Twin Cities Area Customers

Speeds To Be Doubled on Most Popular Tiers at No Additional Cost to Customers,
Just in Time for Back-to-School

ST. PAUL, MN – August 25, 2015 – Comcast today announced it will increase speeds for most Xfinity Internet customers in the company’s Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin service area on Thursday, August 27. These speed increases are being delivered to customers at no additional cost.

Comcast will increase the speeds of its three most popular Xfinity Internet tiers: “Performance” will deliver speeds up to 50 Mbps, up from 25 Mbps; “Blast” will more than double to 105 Mbps, up from 50 Mbps; and “Extreme 105” will increase to 150 Mbps. The speed increases will be available for all Twin Cities area Xfinity Internet customers who currently subscribe to these tiers.

“We continue to deliver the fastest speeds to the most homes in the Twin Cities to provide our customers a terrific online experience,” said Jeff Freyer, Region Vice President, Comcast-Twin Cities Region. “Consumers want Internet service that delivers consistent speed, rock-solid reliability and great value, and we’re proud to meet that demand as the nation’s fastest Internet Service Provider according to Speedtest.net.” Freyer added, “Comcast also provides the fastest in-home WiFi so everyone can get online at the same time, which is especially important as families get ready to go back to school.”

Comcast Twin Cities Speed Increases: 1999-2015

“We applaud Comcast’s commitment to increase Internet speeds at no additional cost for their customers across the Twin Cities,” said Margaret Anderson-Kelliher, President and CEO of the Minnesota High Tech Association and Chair of the Minnesota State Broadband Task Force. “These faster speeds are a big leap forward for broadband in the Twin Cities and will strengthen our future and our position as a great place to live, work and play.”

Ramsey County Commissioner Blake Huffman discussed the benefits of faster Internet speeds for the region. “In today’s world, being connected to the Internet isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. The strength of our communities depends on a vibrant infrastructure, and this investment by Comcast is a perfect example of effective public-private partnerships that benefit everyone.”

Customers can take advantage of this speed increase beginning Thursday morning by ‘power-cycling’ their cable modem with the reset button on the device, or by unplugging the modem power cord from the electrical outlet, waiting a few seconds and then plugging it back into the outlet. Customers can also reset their modem remotely by using the Xfinity My Account app, available for both Apple and Android devices, or by going online at www.comcast.com/myaccount.

Freyer commented on the available options for activating the new speeds. “The use of the Xfinity My Account app is one more example of how we’re working hard to transform the customer experience by giving subscribers more control over their service, and adding even greater value by increasing speeds and delivering their products anytime, anywhere and on any device.”

In addition, Comcast representatives will be on hand during the 2015 Minnesota State Fair at the Fan Central exhibit at Dan Patch Ave. and Underwood St. to assist customers with the speed increase.
