Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts Previews X2: The Next Generation of The Company’s X1 Entertainment Operating System

X2 Adds New Customizable Dashboard and Unifies Multiplatform Content -in an Entirely Personalized Experience that Learns Preferences -and Becomes Smarter Over Time

WASHINGTON D.C. and PHILADELPHIA, PA – June 11, 2013 – Comcast, a global media and technology company, today unveiled the next generation of its cloud-enabled X1 Platform from Xfinity to further transform the TV into an interactive and integrated entertainment experience. This new platform release, known as X2, will be available to customers later this year. The technology was previewed today by Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts at NCTA’s The Cable Show 2013 in Washington, D.C. The company also showcased enhancements available today on its X1 Platform, including the addition of Web-based content.

“The X1 Platform is an incredible example of what’s possible with cloud innovation,” said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO at Comcast Corp. With the introduction of Web-based content to the platform today, and the promise of a faster and more integrated experience with X2, we’re adding more functionality to each screen in a customer’s home, and transforming our video product into a complete entertainment operating system.

The next generation of the X1 Platform will be even smarter and faster, providing more personalized recommendations on multiple screens, for a customized TV product that consumers can access on a TV, smartphone, tablet or PC. It is designed to integrate live and On Demand TV, web content, home control and a growing number of apps in one user interface. The cloud-based technology that powers this experience enables Comcast to accelerate innovation and launch new apps and services on the X1 Platform more easily, resulting in a richer, more dynamic and personalized experience for customers.

New capabilities and features demonstrated at NCTA include:

  • New Customizable Dashboard: Customers will be able to easily launch a new personalized home screen on TV and across mobile devices that will offer a single view into the information they care about. The display will feature a collection of tiles that a customer can customize as they see fit, including all of their favorite apps on one screen. It can be personalized to include information from within the TV experience, such as recently recorded DVR content; from a favorite app, such as traffic alerts weather forecasts, or news headlines; or from a customer’s other Xfinity services, such as calendar appointments, voicemails from Xfinity Voice, as well as their home thermostat and security status from Xfinity Home.
  • Uber-personalization: More recommendations throughout the experience will be surfaced so customers have additional ways to discover new movies and TV shows. The platform will recommend content that is currently on live TV based on the customer’s past viewing habits, and is engineered to become smarter over time. It includes a new six-guide carousel that filters TV listings by specific category, such as sports, kids programming and movies, and also filters by age to help ensure appropriate family viewing.
  • Integrated Multiplatform Content: With tens of thousands of Xfinity TV entertainment choices, the new platform is engineered to connect customers with the content they want quicker than ever before. A new, sleek user interface for TVs, PCs and mobile devices will enable customers to manage content from any screen so preferences, subscriptions, saved programs and parental controls stay consistent, wherever they watch. This integration also adds the flexibility to begin an On Demand program on one device, such as the TV, and then resume it where they left off on another device, such as a tablet or PC.
  • Social Integration: This new experience incorporates social media including viewer ratings from interactive services Rotten Tomatoes and Zeebox, so customers can find the TV shows people are buzzing about, and ratings from Common Sense Media for age-appropriate content. Through the dashboard, consumers can use tiles to track their social feeds or photos on Facebook and Twitter, among others.
  • Web Content and Second-Screen Integration: In advance of the new platform release, two new enhancements are available today on the X1 Platform that integrate Internet content. A new feature called “Send to TV” enables customers to easily fling a web page, like one that features streaming video, directly to their X1 set top box and view it on the big screen. After downloading a bookmarklet onto their computer, tablet or smartphone, a customer chooses the Web content they would like to see on their TV, clicks “Send to TV” in their bookmarks bar, and the content from their computer or device then appears on the television. In addition, for the first time, customers will soon be able to quickly access TV-optimized sites from a variety of third-party partners in an expanding app marketplace.

Comcast plans to begin the initial phase of the rollout for its next-generation experience later this year. The X1 Platform is currently available in 12 markets, and today has completed its launch throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area. More information can be found at www.xfinity.com/x1.

Comcast Harnesses The Power of Its Network To Demonstrate The Future of Broadband Speed and 4K Ultra HD Video

Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts Demonstrates 3+Gbps Broadband Connection;
Comcast Also Provides First Public U.S. Based Transmission of 4K Ultra HD Video

WASHINGTON D.C. and PHILADELPHIA, PA – June 11, 2013 – Today Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts showed the first 3+Gbps broadband connection by opening an email and downloading a 4K Ultra HD video file to a PC in a matter of seconds at NCTA’s The Cable Show 2013 in Washington, D.C.

In addition to the 3+Gbps download, Mr. Roberts said that Comcast will demonstrate the first public U.S. based delivery of 4K Ultra HD video over its existing fiber/HFC network at the NCTA show (booth #3319). An emerging video standard, 4K Ultra HD video offers a display resolution four times greater than today’s 1080p high-definition standard and offers one of the highest quality pictures possible today.

“Comcast has one of the fastest networks in the world with tremendous flexibility, the greatest capacity, and the best economics to deliver America’s high-speed future to millions,” said Mr. Roberts. “These demonstrations reinforce the capability of our existing network while showing we are ready today to take consumers wherever the future of broadband speed and video technology may go.”

This is the fourth time that Mr. Roberts has demonstrated the industry’s speed leadership at the NCTA show, which illustrates the tremendous evolution of speed in the United States. In 1996, he showed a 10Mbps connection for the first time that quickly downloaded photos, and in 2007 he downloaded the Encyclopedia Britannica over a 160Mbps connection over a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem. In 2011, he demonstrated a 1Gbps broadband connection for the first time.

The American broadband industry has invested $1.2 trillion since 1996 to deliver the fastest speeds and latest innovation to consumers. Comcast alone has invested tens of billions of dollarsto create a network across the U.S. that makes broadband widely available. At the core of Comcast’s network is a fiber backbone that stretches across the country with about 140,000 route miles of fiber – enough to wrap the earth nearly six times. As the nation’s largest ISP with nearly 20 million customers, Comcast already provides the fastest speeds to more homes than any other provider and has increased Internet speeds for its customers 11 times in 11 years.

Demonstrating the delivery of 4K Ultra HD on its existing network is another milestone in Comcast’s long history of changing the way consumers experience TV – including being one of the first companies to offer VOD, HD and 3D. While 4K Ultra HD is in the early stages, Comcast is ready to deliver what could be the next-generation of video as the content and devices are developed and become more readily available for use in consumers’ homes.

A video replay of Mr. Roberts’ presentation will be available on http://corporate.comcast.com/ncta2013.

Comcast Unveils Plans for Millions of Xfinity WiFi Hotspots

Comcast today announced plans to create millions of WiFi access points for its customers through a neighborhood hotspot initiative.

Comcast is beginning to give its Xfinity Internet customers an additional “xfinitywifi” signal (or SSID) in their home that is completely separate and distinct from the family’s private and secure home WiFi signal. Offered at no additional cost to Xfinity Internet residential customers, the additional WiFi hotspots will enable friends, relatives, visitors and other Xfinity Internet customers instant, easy access to fast and reliable WiFi.

“WiFi is at the center of our strategy to offer our customers the best online experience, whether it’s the fastest WiFi experience in the home, or a fast and reliable WiFi environment outside the home,” said Tom Nagel, Senior Vice President of Business Development, Comcast Cable. “WiFi is an important part of our strategy to be the place where customers connect all devices, anywhere and at any time.”

Comcast’s newest Wireless Gateway broadcasts two WiFi signals. By default, one is securely configured for the private use of the home subscriber. The second is a neighborhood “xfinitywifi” network signal that can be shared. This creates an extension of the Xfinity WiFi network and will allow visiting Xfinity Internet subscribers to sign in and connect using their own usernames and passwords.

As the nation’s largest ISP with nearly 20 million customers, Comcast started a neighborhood hotspot trial last year in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Northern Virginia and the Greater Washington, D.C. metro area. Currently, more than 100,000 Xfinity Internet subscribers already enjoy these WiFi access points being offered by other Xfinity Internet subscribers.

WiFi is part of Comcast’s broader strategy to create the foundation our customers need to power their Internet-connected devices in and out of the home. Comcast recently introduced a new Wireless Gateway that gives customers the nation’s fastest wireless speeds with the most coverage throughout the connected home. By combining WiFi speeds with the latest Xfinity apps, home control technology and other Internet-enabled services, Comcast is giving customers new, simple and convenient ways to take advantage of the speed delivered on its broadband and WiFi networks.

Comcast’s WiFi strategy currently includes two approaches. The first is the inclusion of tens of thousands of Xfinity WiFi access points in the CableWiFi Alliance, which enables Xfinity Internet customers access to more than 150,000 indoor and outdoor WiFi hotspots on the go in more than a dozen major cities across the country through the “CableWiFi” SSID. The second is this launch of the new home-based, neighborhood hotspot initiative.

Comcast has invested tens of billions of dollars to create a network across the U.S. that makes broadband widely available. The company has changed the Internet experience for millions of customers by providing the nation’s fastest speeds, reliable service, trusted security and online content. Comcast has increased Internet speeds for its customers 11 times, most recently doubling two of its most popular Xfinity Internet speed plans, Blast! and Extreme 50, for no additional cost across the company’s entire footprint.

A coverage map and more information about Xfinity WiFi are both available at: www.xfinity.com/wifi.
