Comcast Unveils Ambitious And Comprehensive Broadband Adoption Experiment For Twin Cities Area

Internet Essentials Provides Low-Cost Internet Service, Affordable Computers and Digital Literacy Training to Families with Children in the National School Lunch Program

TWIN CITIES, MN – August 11, 2011 – Comcast is pleased to announce the nationwide launch of Internet Essentials, an ambitious and comprehensive broadband adoption experiment. It’s the first program to address three of the primary barriers to broadband adoption that research has identified – 1) a lack of understanding of how the Internet is relevant and useful; 2) the cost of a home computer, and 3) the cost of Internet service. Internet Essentials is available to low-income families across Comcast’s Twin Cities service area with children who are eligible to receive free lunches under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The goal of Internet Essentials is to help close the digital divide and ensure more Americans benefit from all the Internet has to offer.

“While America has increasingly become a digital nation, many low-income families are being left at a disadvantage because they don’t have Internet service at home. Comcast is leading the charge in making broadband adoption a reality for more families,” said Bill Wright, senior vice president of Comcast’s Twin Cities Region. “We’re proud to partner with a variety of schools and community organizations in the Twin Cities to help spread the word about Internet Essentials. We need parents, educators, community leaders and other government officials to join in this effort to help increase broadband adoption in our community.”

According to David L. Cohen, Comcast Corporation Executive Vice President, “The Internet is a great equalizer and a life-changing technology. Internet Essentials helps level the playing field for low-income families by connecting students online with their teachers and their school’s educational resources. Parents will also be enabled to receive digital literacy training so they can do things like apply for jobs online or use the Internet to learn more about healthcare and government services available where they live.”

Service Details:
Internet Essentials participants will receive:

  • Residential Internet service for $9.95 a month;
  • No price increases, no activation fees, or equipment rental fees;
  • A voucher to purchase a low-cost computer for $149.99 + tax;
  • Access to free digital literacy training in print, online or in person.

Additional benefits include a 30-day money back guarantee and a complementary Nortonâ„¢ Security Suite ($160 value) for comprehensive online security protection.

Eligibility:
A household is eligible to participate in the Internet Essentials program if it meets the following criteria:

  • Is located where Comcast offers Internet service;
  • Has at least one child eligible to receive a free school lunch under the NSLP;
  • As an example, according to the Department of Agriculture, a household of three would have to make less than $25,000 a year in income
  • Has not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days;
  • Does not have an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment.

Comcast will sign up eligible families in the program for at least three years and through the end of the 2013-14 school year. Any household that qualifies during this three-year period will remain eligible for Internet Essentials provided the household still qualifies for the program until that child graduates from high school.

In the Twin Cities, Comcast supports a wide array of community organizations through innovative programs and partnership opportunities, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Minneapolis Urban League, Hmong American Partnership, CLUES, Neighborhood House, and many others. Comcast also provides courtesy video and/or Internet services to schools and other public entities across its service area.

Comcast Launches New Internet Safety Services

Constant Guard Protection Suite Helps Safeguard Passwords, Online Accounts, Credit Cards and Other Personal Information From Cyber Criminals

New Services Create the Most Comprehensive Online Protections Offered By Any Major Internet Service Provider

PHILADELPHIA, PA – June 2, 2011 – Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), the nation’s largest residential Internet Service Provider, announced today it has introduced new Internet safety solutions and resources for its Xfinity Internet customers for no additional fee. Timed to coincide with Internet Safety Month, the company’s new desktop application, called the Constant Guard Protection Suite, is a $360 value and helps customers secure their personal and financial information from cyber criminals better than ever before.

The application serves as a simple and convenient way to access all of Comcast’s online security resources including the top-rated Norton™ Security Suite, a Secure Backup & Share service as well as the new IDENTITY GUARD® identity theft protection service.

“We know consumers are increasingly concerned about online identity theft,” said Cathy Avgiris, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Communications and Data Services for Comcast Cable. “By adding identity theft protection to our Constant Guard Security Suite arsenal, Comcast now offers the most comprehensive online security protection of any major Internet service provider in the U.S.”

Recent studies underscore the importance of online safety. According to a survey commissioned by Comcast, 80% of adults are concerned about their personal information being stolen by a cyber criminal. To put that in perspective, a 2010 Javelin Strategy and Research report found identity theft and fraud affected more than 8 million Americans at a cost of more than $37 billion dollars.

Once downloaded and installed on a home computer, the Constant Guard Protection Suite helps:

  • Protect against malicious software designed to steal passwords and online account information;
  • Secure passwords and conveniently remember them for you;
  • Provide one-click secure login to banks, shopping Web sites and online accounts;
  • Protect credit cards when used online; and
  • Conceal keystrokes of what you type online thereby shielding personal and financial information from being copied or stolen.

Building on its ongoing bot detection and notification efforts, Comcast is also now offering an identity theft protection service from Intersections Inc. IDENTITY GUARD®, which proactively helps protect customers from identity theft both online and offline. IDENTITY GUARD® is available in three levels of service.

The first, called Essentials, is included for no additional cost with an XFINITY Internet subscription and includes lost wallet protection, support from identity theft protection experts on what to do if you’re a victim of identity theft, and online financial tools. Customers can also upgrade their service to include even more protection, such as proactive monitoring and alerts of personal information including Social Security numbers, access to full credit profile and scores, and visibility to public records. Only Xfinity Internet customers can get the Preferred package at a discounted rate of $7.99 a month or a Premier package also at a discounted rate of $12.99 a month as compared to the regular retail price.

Constant Guard, only from Comcast, is the culmination of a multi-year effort to assemble a dedicated team of security professionals, implement best-in-class security software and create a Security Web portal of consumer resources designed to help educate and empower customers to protect themselves online.

Comcast Now Brings Thousands of Hours of TV Shows aad Movies To The iPhone and iPod Touch For Free To Customers

Nearly 6,000 Hours of On Demand Content From 25 Programmers Now Available to Enjoy
While On-the-Go or at Home; App Also Features New Personalization Capabilities

PHILADELPHIA – May 23, 2011 – Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) today announced its digital subscribers using the Apple® iPhone® and iPod touch® now can stream thousands of hours of On Demand video on their devices through the company’s popular Xfinity TV® app, which has been downloaded more than two million times since it launched in November. Beginning today, customers using these devices and the iPad® can download a new version of the Xfinity TV app, and have access to a vast collection of entertainment in the palm of their hands for free.
Comcast introduced On Demand content for viewing both inside and outside of the home on the iPad in February. During the past three months, Comcast has nearly doubled the amount of entertainment available to stream through the app, now totaling almost 6,000 hours. To reach this milestone, Comcast has recently added several new programmers, bringing in top video selections from 25 content partners.

“Whether our customers are relaxing around the house or traveling around the country, we’re bringing them a huge selection of great content at their fingertips, all for free,” said Matt Strauss, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Comcast Interactive Media. “Our development team will continue to add even more choices and personalized options to the Xfinity TV app, giving our customers access to the entertainment they want, where and when they want it.”

The ability to view On Demand content on the iPhone and iPod Touch now enables customers to watch Xfinity TV offerings across Apple’s smartphone and computer product lineup. Users of Mac® products can view thousands of movies and hit TV shows through Comcast’s Xfinity TV online destination, www.XfinityTV.com, also for free.

This latest release of the app is the fourth significant update since it launched only seven months ago. Additional enhancements have also been incorporated into this version to help further personalize the customer’s experience, including enabling users to filter their content choices by genre and network.
For first-time users, the app will automatically populate with the customer’s channel lineup, eliminating the need for a manual set up process.

In addition to these features and its On Demand video streaming capabilities, the Xfinity TV app also can be used as the ultimate remote control and discovery tool – it gives users the ability to browse and discover content across multiple platforms, whether it be available on online, On Demand or on TV; change TV channels in real time; and remotely program and manage multiple DVRs at home.

Comcast will continue to expand the features and functionality of the Xfinity TV app and add even more content on a continual basis. To learn more about the Xfinity TV app, please visit www.xfinity.com/tvapp.
