Comcast Unleashes New 50/10 Mbps Extreme High-Speed Internet Service in Independence / Olathe

Launch of DOCSIS 3.0 Technology Also Means Faster Speeds at No Additional Cost for

Existing Comcast High-Speed Internet Customers

Independence, MO – December 8, 2009 – Comcast, one of the nation’s leading providers of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today unveiled its ground-breaking 50 Mbps Extreme High-Speed Internet service for consumers in the company’s Independence, MO and Olathe, KS service areas. As part of a nationwide rollout of new speeds, Comcast is offering area residents one of the fastest broadband services available in the U.S. today: up to 50 Mbps downloads and 10 Mbps uploads.

Comcast is also launching its Ultra tier of high-speed Internet service, featuring speeds of up to 22 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. In addition, existing Comcast high-speed Internet customers will enjoy even faster Internet access – including TWICE the current download speeds – at no additional cost.

Extreme 50 High-Speed Internet service is a result of Comcast’s deployment of wideband DOCSIS 3.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) technology, which sets a new standard for delivering high-speed Internet service access fiber-optic cable networks. “We are excited to deliver these new wideband speeds to customers,” said Dave Williams, vice president and general manager, Comcast Independence / Olathe. “We’ve received overwhelmingly positive response to these faster speeds in markets where the service is already available, and we’re confident of their popularity in the Independence and Olathe area as well.”

New Residential Tiers

  • Extreme 50, offering up to 50 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 10 Mbps of upstream speed at $99.95/month.*
  • Ultra, offering up to 22 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 5 Mbps of upstream speed at $62.95/month.*

With Extreme 50, Comcast customers, for example, will be able to download a high-definition movie (6 GB) in about 16 minutes, a standard-def movie (2 GB) in about 5 minutes and a standard-def TV show (300 MB) in a matter of seconds. Customers with Extreme 50 also will be able to download digital photos, songs and games faster than ever. (*Pricing for multi-product Comcast customers.)

New Speeds for Existing Customers
Performance tier customers will benefit from doubled downstream and upstream speeds, offering up to 12 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively.

Performance Plus customers will be upgraded to Comcast’s Blast! tier, which will double their download speeds to up to 16 Mbps and provide up to 2 Mbps of upload speed.

Plus, with PowerBoost technology, Comcast High-Speed Internet customers are able to enjoy even faster speeds to download and upload files such as videos, games, music and photos.

Comcast’s new Extreme 50 and Ultra 22 Mbps high-speed Internet tiers will be available to Independence and Olathe area Business Services customers as well, beginning Tuesday, December 15, at competitive commercial pricing, and will include features like Microsoft Communications Services, Windows Sharepoint, web hosting, Mobile Support and more.

These announcements propel the Independence and Olathe area into one of the most advanced high-speed Internet communities in the nation and showcase the power of Comcast’s advanced digital, high-capacity fiber-optic network, a flexible, scalable infrastructure that is ready to expand into the future. The result is an unmatched consumer and business experience that will continue to converge video, high-speed Internet and digital phone services with future applications like Universal Caller ID to the TV and PC, viewable voice mail and the ability to program DVRs remotely.

100 Mbps Internet Service in Twin Cities Press Release

Comcast Launches 100 Mbps High-Speed Internet Service
For Businesses in the Twin Cities

Comcast Offers One of the Fastest Internet Speeds in the U.S. Includes Comprehensive Business Solution with Microsoft and McAfee Software to Increase Productivity and Provide Security Protection

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL, MN AND PHILADELPHIA, PA – September 8, 2009 – Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), one of the nation’s leading providers of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today launched a 100 Mbps high-speed Internet service to businesses in the Twin Cities region. For the first time, Comcast is offering business customers one of the fastest broadband services available in the U.S. today: up to 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) downloads and up to 15 Mbps uploads.

The service is another demonstration of the power of Comcast’s deployment of next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 technology, which sets a new standard for delivering high-speed Internet service across fiber-optic networks. The technology, also referred to as wideband, will enable Comcast to continue to deliver progressively faster speeds well into the future.

“Internet speeds this fast are a game changer for businesses,” said Bill Stemper, President of Comcast Business Services. “When Comcast doubled its Internet speeds last year, business customers immediately took advantage of that wideband pipe to connect regional offices, support remote employees, and perform large file transfers,” Stemper added. “100 Mbps service is ideal for data-intensive businesses that need this kind of speed and want an alternative to slower, more expensive T1 lines.”

The 100 Mbps service is a comprehensive business solution that includes Microsoft Communication Services (valued at more than $500) a world-class productivity suite that combines Windows SharePoint and Microsoft Outlook email powered by Microsoft Exchange Server for no additional fee. In addition, the service includes McAfee’s Security Suite software (up to a $280 annual retail value) that protects up to 25 PCs from viruses and spyware. There are a range of other Web site hosting, design features and options available as well.

With download speeds of up to 100 Mbps, customers will be able to operate their businesses more efficiently and productively than ever. For example, downloading a large 2 GB file (such as a hi-res X-ray or a graphic design) can be completed in about 2 minutes. To download the same sized file on a typical business class 1.5 Mbps T1 line would take more than 3 hours.

“We’re thrilled to be the first market to offer a 100 Mbps service to our business customers in Minnesota,” said Bill Wright, Vice President, Comcast Twin Cities Region. “This offering reaffirms our commitment to be the speed leader in the Twin Cities and Minnesota and to help businesses succeed with tools that can have a real impact on their bottom lines.”

Today’s announcement propels the Twin Cities region into one of the leading high-speed Internet communities in the nation and showcases the power of Comcast’s advanced digital, high-capacity fiber-optic network. Comcast has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the Twin Cities to create a network that is flexible, scalable and ready to expand into the future.
